San Diego welcomes the arrival of a world-class, 1900-capacity concert venue, THE SOUND, and 8-time Grammy winner Ziggy Marley will help launch it with a very special performance on February 3, 2023.

Located at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, and operated by Solana Beach-based Belly Up Entertainment, THE SOUND is a brand-new, state-of-the-art performance space that adds an exciting mid-sized venue option for San Diego music lovers to see and hear their favorite artists.

Envisioned and developed by California’s 22ndDistrict Agricultural Association, the new room will host an eclectic range of public and private events, starting with Ziggy Marley’s special tribute to his father, Bob Marley, who would have turned 78 just a couple of days later.  More headline concert announcements will follow over the next couple of weeks.

Built inside the mission-styled Surfside Center on the Fairgrounds’ east side, THE SOUND’s modern, intimate ambiance is underscored by its seaside vibe. Seamlessly integrating current design into historic architecture, the new room amplifies the region’s thriving entertainment scene. Thus, THE SOUND.

“All of us at the 22nd District are thrilled to deliver THE SOUND to every San Diegan,” says Carlene Moore, CEO of the 22nd District. “We’re especially proud to partner with the great people at the legendary Belly Up venue, a long-time San Diego music company, who will undoubtedly curate the new room with local sensitivity. And, what better performer to start off the music at THE SOUND than a legend like Ziggy Marley?”

“So many great bands have played the Belly Up throughout the years, and now THE SOUND provides a really cool next step for these bands as they grow,” says Steve Goldberg, co-owner of the Belly Up.  “It’s a natural progression, right in our backyard, where we’ve been booking shows at the fair and the races for years.   We’re fortunate to be working with such good, professional partners at the Fairgrounds, and we can’t wait to hear the sound of Ziggy Marley coming from this exciting new venue.”

Adds Carlene Moore, “We invite everyone to experience THE SOUND!”

About Belly Up Entertainment:

Belly Up Entertainment is the booking and marketing division of the Belly Up concert venue in Solana Beach, CA. The Belly Up opened in 1974, with only a couple of mics and no stage. Over the years it became a frequent stop for legends like John Lee Hooker, Etta James, and BB King. Many notable artists made early performances at the intimate nightclub on their way up the ladder, including No Doubt, Black Eyed Peas, Mumford and Sons, and Childish Gambino. In recent years, major artists performing there have included The Killers, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jimmy Buffett, Willie Nelson, Tom Jones, and perhaps most famously, the Rolling Stones.  The Belly Up Entertainment group has expanded beyond their flagship venue and is now the managing promoter for THE SOUND.
