A Great Day in the Stoke Returns to Huntington Beach October 10

A Great Day in the Stoke returns to Huntington Beach on Saturday, October 10, 2026, for its fifth annual gathering celebrating Black surf culture.

The event is free to attend and brings a community-centered day to one of Southern California’s most recognizable surf settings.

For Revolt, the story starts with the people in the lineup.

Competition matters, but so do the introductions on the sand, the chance to learn and the feeling that there is a place for you in the water.

A Surf Gathering With a Cultural Purpose

Visit Huntington Beach describes the event’s founding purpose as creating a welcoming space for Black surfers to connect, compete, recognize community leaders and introduce others to surfing. BIPOC communities and allies are welcomed.

The first gathering took place in Huntington Beach on June 4, 2022. Its concept draws inspiration from the group portraits A Great Day in Harlem (1958) and A Great Day in Hip-Hop (1998), connecting surf culture with a tradition of documenting a community together.

That connection gives the event a meaning beyond an individual heat result. A photograph can preserve who was there; the gathering itself creates opportunities for people to meet, share knowledge and keep showing up.

What’s Planned for October 10?

The organizer’s 2026 event listing includes a surf competition, a lululemon community run, beach yoga, Double Dutch, a vendor village, live music and a DJ, and an awards ceremony.

You can come to watch the surfing or explore the activities on the beach. Spectating is free. Check the registration page for individual activity requirements and times rather than assuming everything is available on arrival.

Surf Lessons: Check the Waitlist First

As of October 2, the surf lesson registration option is labeled waitlist. Joining it does not guarantee a lesson. The organizer says participants will receive an updated ticket by email if a place becomes available.

That is worth checking before planning your day around a lesson. You can still attend the gathering, but wait for a confirmed lesson ticket before treating a spot as reserved.

Why This Fits Revolt’s Surf Story

Producing the Revolt Summer Surf Series for 12 seasons gave us plenty of reasons to care about what happens between heats. A local surf event can be where someone meets a future friend, finds encouragement or starts imagining a different relationship with the ocean.

A Great Day in the Stoke deserves attention on its own terms: a celebration centered on Black surfers, with room for the wider community to take part and support it.

Access to surfing also depends on the coast itself. For a related Revolt archive story, revisit Victory at San O, our coverage of the agreement securing continued public access to San Onofre State Beach.
