BILL PIERCE is PIERCE WILLIAMS is RADIOACTIVE FUTURE
hile perhaps best known in San Diego County for curating edgy, underground art shows with his artist collective RADIOACTIVE FUTURE in the 2000s, Bill Pierce returns after a long hiatus with a new art project, a new name, and a new attitude.
Under the pseudonym PIERCE WILLIAMS, his new series of stencil serigraph prints will debut at Artlab, 3536 Adams Avenue, San Diego, with a free opening reception on Saturday, March 1, 2014 from 7 – 11pm. His solo art show, called REINVENTION, will continue to be on display Tuesday-Saturday, March 4 – 31, 1 – 6pm daily.
The artist calls his new project the PIERCE WILLIAMS STENCIL ART REVOLUTION, and the work features his new technique of creating fine art prints by hand, with a plastic stencil, silkscreen ink, and roller brush. Each print is 4 color, 18”x24”, ink on 24lb. cover stock. 400 of each design are made as signed /numbered limited editions. Of the 400, 100 of each color are made in brown, yellow, red and blue.
The artist has primarily done portraits of musicians so far for this series, including Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Dave Gahan, Elvis Costello, Fiona Apple, Ice Cube, Johnny Cash, Jonathan Richman, Lou Reed and Trent Reznor. Planned portraits include more musicians, visual artists, actors, and other famous people.
“the phrase is forward-looking, in a bleak sort of way. It also has a retro ring to it, conjuring up Cold War images of grade-school youngsters ducking under their desks in practice drills for a Soviet attack.”
Pierce’s work spans a variety of media, including sculpture, stencil prints, silkscreen prints and clothing, rock posters, and web/graphic design. He has curated over 40 art exhibitions, and his art has been shown on national television and throughout the United States, as well as internationally in Japan, Spain, Iceland, Italy, Belgium and the UK.
His metal sculptures made a splash in the local scene when shown with the artist collective members of RADIOACTIVE FUTURE. “Allosaurus”, a dinosaur sculpture is 11 feet long and 5 feet high. “The Robot Warrior of the Radioactive Future” is 10 feet high and 2 feet wide. Art critic Robert L. Pincus said about Pierce’s group in an article, “Radioactive Future - the phrase is forward-looking, in a bleak sort of way. It also has a retro ring to it, conjuring up Cold War images of grade-school youngsters ducking under their desks in practice drills for a Soviet attack.”
Melding his love of music and art while promoting the San Diego music scene, he has designed hundreds of rock posters for various bands and local venues including Brick by Brick, the Jumping Turtle, The Casbah, and The Ruby Room.
Musicians and groups he has worked with include FEAR, Kurtis Blow, The Supersuckers, Voodoo Glow Skulls, U.K. Subs, Adolescents, Battalion of Saints, Sprung Monkey, Pato Banton, Agnostic Front and many more.
He works as a freelance graphic artist and web designer and lives with his family in North County. He is the website designer for Brick by Brick, the Whistle Stop Bar, Bull’s Smokin’ BBQ and Mona Lisa restaurants.
